24 Hours in Chicago: Top 5 Things to Do

Chicago Waterfront

As a lifelong Chicagoan, I can tell you one thing: narrowing down what to do in Chicago to just five things is nearly impossible. This city has so much to offer—from breathtaking architecture to world-class dining, stunning parks, and vibrant neighborhoods. But if you only have 24 hours in the Windy City, here’s how you can make the most of your day. Let’s dive in!

1. Start Your Day at Millennium Park

Millennium Park is a quintessential Chicago experience. It’s home to the iconic “Bean” (officially named Cloud Gate), a massive mirrored sculpture that perfectly reflects the city skyline. Walk through Lurie Garden, snap photos at the Crown Fountain, or just sit and enjoy the energy of downtown. It’s the perfect spot to immerse yourself in Chicago’s lively atmosphere.

2. Visit the Art Institute of Chicago

Right next to Millennium Park is one of the world’s greatest art museums: The Art Institute of Chicago. Even if you’re not a typical museum-goer, this place will amaze you. From the stunning Impressionist collection (hello, Monet and Van Gogh!) to modern masterpieces like Grant Wood’s American Gothic, there’s something for everyone. Make sure to stroll through the modern wing, which offers stunning views of the city.

3. Walk Along the Lakefront and Riverwalk

Chicago is blessed with a beautiful lakefront, and taking a walk along Lake Michigan is a must. Whether you’re strolling through Grant Park or heading north toward Oak Street Beach, the views are unbeatable. For an even richer experience, include a visit to the Museum Campus, where you’ll find the Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, and Adler Planetarium—all located on a scenic stretch of lakefront. Afterward, make your way to the Chicago Riverwalk, a scenic pathway lined with restaurants, public art, and boat tours. It’s the perfect mix of relaxation and urban exploration.

4. Indulge in Chicago’s Dining Scene

No trip to Chicago is complete without indulging in its culinary delights. Whether you want to grab a deep-dish pizza from Lou Malnati’s, enjoy Michelin-starred fine dining at Alinea, or devour a classic Italian beef sandwich from Al’s, this city has something for every foodie. For an authentic local experience, stop by Portillo’s for a Chicago-style hot dog or Italian beef. If you’re in the mood for upscale pub fare with a close to Millennium Park, The Gage is a must-visit. If you’re here during the summer, don’t miss the outdoor patios and rooftop bars that give you incredible skyline views.

5. Take an Architectural Walk or River Cruise

Chicago is the birthplace of the skyscraper, and our architecture is second to none. You can take a guided architectural walking tour through the Loop or hop on an architectural boat cruise on the Chicago River. Either way, you’ll get to see and learn about the stunning designs by architects like Frank Lloyd Wright and Mies van der Rohe. The skyline views alone are worth it.

Honorable Mentions: So Much More to Explore

It’s genuinely painful to leave so much off this list. Shopping on Michigan Avenue or the swanky boutiques on Oak Street? Visiting the free and family-friendly Lincoln Park Zoo? Exploring Chicago’s diverse neighborhoods, from Wicker Park to Pilsen? The options are endless, and 24 hours doesn’t even scratch the surface.

Final Thoughts

Chicago is a city that thrives on energy, creativity, and diversity. No matter how you spend your time here, you’ll leave with incredible memories and, hopefully, a desire to come back. As someone who calls this city home, I can promise you—you’ll fall in love with it just like I have.

    • Downtown during the daytime is generally pretty safe if you stay along Michigan Ave and over to Wells St. That said, it is a big City and there is a lot of crime after dark. And there are alwas crimes of opportunity. Use reasonable precautions, and you should be okay. I’ll post some travel tips in a separate post. Safe travels!
